THE RELIGIOUS EASTER IN PUGLIA

Easter spent in Taranto is unforgettable. Holy Week is inspired by ancient Catholic rites, which for three centuries have been handed down unchanged and still involve the whole city from the depths of the soul. The rituals begin on Palm Sunday with a flagpole during which the brothers of the two congregations are awarded the honor of carrying the heavy statue in procession.
The climax is reached with the traditional procession of Holy Thursday and Mysteries on Friday that one of the traces of the Spanish domination in Southern Italy. The brothers parade slowly until dawn with his head covered by a cap, bare feet, dragging the statues of the Virgin of Sorrows, the Dead Christ. The transition from religious procession between two wings of the crowd is accompanied by an intense and solemn music.
